“Know ye not that they, which run in a race, run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that you may obtain”- 1corin 9:24
The festival of Olympics was started at Athens in greece.During the days of Apostle Paul. Hence while quoting the above verses; he compares our spiritual life with that running race.
The example given in the verses may be a running race. Hence he says many may run in a race but one receives the prize. There are 3 basic steps the sports person needs to follow.
1. He must run only on his track, must not step out of track.
2. He has to compete and finish the race- Cannot quit in middle.
3. He must compete with others overcome them, only then he gets prize.
Running in his track- Our Lord have given commandments, laws, statutes, which we need to follow, we must abide with Jesus Christ. We should not go behind worldly things. We need to do the will of God and lead a life which pleases Jesus Christ. God have given two greatest commandments, Commandment of Love, love the Lord with all your heart, mind, and soul. Love your neighbor as you love thou. We need to follow this throughout our life. We cannot enter into heaven without love; For God is Love 1 john 4:8.
2. If runner steps into others track , blocks him, or hinders him, he will be disqualified, this shows that we after knowing truths, doctrines, our walk of life, talk, activities ,works, in church or outside ,should not hurt others, disturb or distract others, it will affect their spiritual life. We must adorn the very character of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
3.Complete or finish the race- a half way runner cannot get prize, similarly as a believer after getting saved, baptized in water and receiving Holy spirit, we need to follow the doctrines and complete this earthly journey. We must not get back slide, sway away in times of trial. we need to hold on to the promises of God and pray to continue in this spiritual life. We must never get discouraged.”Faith brings victory, fear leads to failure”. We must have great faith in God in times of sufferings, so that God will give Grace to endure those sufferings.
Only one receives the Prize- literally only the person one who comes first will be given 1st Prize. But spiritually all who attains the perfect character of Jesus Christ will be crowned. We must grow in our spiritual life in faith, Love, Holiness, Forgiveness, Humbleness, and Meekness- Gal 5:22.
God permits trials in our life to mould our character; we must leave our old character and change our character to be like Jesus Christ. Once we attain the perfection, our earthly race will end. We may be young or old, old or new believer that doesn’t matter. Jesus Christ appears in sky only for perfected saints. If we are not perfect, then we cannot be caught up in his coming. Let us pray so that God may give us Grace to be like him when Jesus Christ appears in Glory.
“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” Jude 24
